AAA says 33 million Americans will travel this Labor Day
AAA Travel projects that despite economic struggles, 33 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Labor Day weekend—a 2.9 increase from last year.
The AAA/HIS Global Insight 2012 Labor Day Holiday Travel Forecast reports that 66 percent of intended travelers surveyed said that their current financial situation wouldn’t negatively impact their travel plans. Twenty-one percent would economize in other areas. Nine percent would plan to take a shorter trip and four percent would look for a cheaper, alternative mode of transportation.
Despite fluctuating fuel prices, approximately 28.2 million people (85 percent of holiday travelers) said they would make their Labor Day holiday journey by automobile–a 3.1 percent increase over figures for 2011.
Other statistics include:
–The number of air travelers are expected to increase by 3.7 percent.
–Fifty-four percent of surveyed travelers said they would be taking shorter distance trips—between 100 and 400 round-trip miles.
–Travelers this Labor Day can expect an increase (by four percent at AAA Three Diamond lodgings) in hotel rates, while car rental rates will average $39, a ten percent decrease from one year ago.
AAA’s projections are made with economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight, the Boston-based economic research and consulting firm.
