AAA says Fourth of July holiday will be busiest ever

Saturday, 22 Jun, 2018 0

Expect busy airports and roads this 4th of July holiday.

The AAA is predicting a record high of 46.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Independence Day holiday period, between July 3 and July 8.

That is an increase of 5% on last year, despite an increase in gas prices which have risen nearly 20% in the past year.

Still, there is generally higher confidence in the economy and a little more disposal income for many, following the tax reform bill.

"This Independence Day will be one for the record books, as more Americans take to the nation’s roads, skies, rails, and waterways than ever before," said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president of AAA Travel and Publishing.

"Confident consumers with additional disposable income will look to spend on travel this holiday, building on an already busy summer travel season."

A record 3.76 million passengers will travel by air, which is a rise of nearly 8%.

About 3.5 million passengers will take a train, bus, or cruise ship.

AAA says the late afternoon of July 3 will see the longest traffic jams and travel times could double in major metro areas across the country.
