ABTA has passed a resolution which allows its Board of Directors to throw out members who damage the reputation of the association or fellow members.
It means that if a company’s conduct constitutes a threat of ‘serious and imminent detriment’ to either a consumer or to ABTA, its membership will be suspended.
The resolution was passed at the association’s AGM this week, but it is not known if it was made in relation to a particular member’s actions.
When asked the specific reason for the resolution to be passed, a spokesman for ABTA said: "From time to time we will amend the articles of the association to enable ABTA to take appropriate action to safeguard the interests of ABTA and its membership.
"This will be done by means of a resolution or resolutions at an AGM or EGM. These changes may or may not be in relation to issues effecting specific members and these would not be subject to public discussion unless as a result of action from the ABTA Code of Conduct committee."
ABTA also passed a resolution that membership of ABTA is restricted to companies that trade in ways ‘that support the objects for which ABTA was established’.
