Holidaymakers are among at least 10,000 people who were evacuated overnight from homes, villas and campsites in the south of France.

Campers were forced to flee onto local beaches to escape wildfires blazing near Bormes-les-Mimoses in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region.

One of the worst fires is close to the popular resort of St Tropez.

Homes have also been evacuated on the French island of Corsica due to fires there.

Up to 4,000 firefighters and troops using water bombers have been trying to put out the flames since Monday, but France says the fires aren’t yet under control as it doesn’t have enough resources and it has asked other European countries for help.

An estimated 15 square miles of land has been burned along the Mediterranean coast, inland and on the island of Corsica.

Eurocamp tweeted that none of its campsites had been affected by the forest fires. It said it was in constant contact with its regional managers and would let customers know if the situation changed.

Celebrity Joan Collins was amongst those evacuated from villas near St Tropez. The actress tweeted that the fire had been started by a barbecue but authorities have not confirmed the cause of the blaze.
