An extra bank holiday has been officially granted to mark King Charles III’s coronation.

It falls on Monday, 8 May 2023, two days after the ceremony, the government said.

It is in addition to the usual May bank holiday a week earlier.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it represents ‘a unique moment for our country to come together and celebrate.’

“I look forward to seeing people pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

There had been calls from MPs for an extra public holiday to mark the occasion.
