Aer Lingus chief executive Dermot Mannion has resigned, a month after the airline reported heavy losses.

The airline’s chairman, Colm Barrington, will take over the role until a replacement is found.

Announcing his resignation, Mannion said: “My decision to step down will allow a new CEO to bring fresh thinking and new ideas to the business.”

Aer Lingus reported a net loss of €108 million for 2008.
