AFTA applauds Emirates announcement
The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) today applauded the Emirates Airline decision to incorporate the fuel levy into the published fare on all Emirates tickets effective April 1, 2006 and to pay Australian travel agents the standard Emirates 9% commission on the levy.
Commenting on the move, AFTA Chief Executive Mike Hatton said “In February 2005 IATA reminded all member airlines that fuel levies should be incorporated into their fare as a Q surcharge. Whilst AFTA wrote to all airlines operating into and out of Australia seeking an implementation date for this recommendation, only a handful replied to the correspondence. Emirates was one of the replies AFTA received.”
AFTA accepts that system changes are necessary in order to implement the IATA recommendation, but believes the recommendation should be implemented in order to overcome industry and consumer confusion surrounding this levy.
Mr. Hatton further commented: “AFTA has been aware for some months that Emirates was trialing this change in smaller markets. At the time Emirates initiated that trial, the airline also gave AFTA an undertaking that if the trial proved successful then the change would be implemented in the Australia market.
Emirates is now honouring the undertaking that it gave to AFTA for the benefit of Australian consumers and agents, and on behalf of all agents AFTA thanks Emirates for its co-operation”
