Allen will also join the finance committee, while James will join the charity’s activities committee.

They join The Travel Foundation chairman Roger Heape, former boss of British Airways Holidays, and trustees, including managing director of TUI UK Dermot Blastland, John de Vial, a director of Thomas Cook, and Mark Tanzer, chief executive of ABTA.

The charity is funding projects including two in Kenya, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, Cyprus, the Gambia, Tobago, and the Dominican Republic, as well as ongoing research into reduce the carbon footprint of holidays.

Greenacre said: “If the travel industry wants to have a future it has to invest in sustainable tourism. The Travel Foundation is leading the way.

“The Co-operative Travel is the only UK agent with a clearly-defined ethical strategy and we were the first major travel retailer to oppose the planned third runway at Heathrow.

“We are also proud to support The Travel Foundation’s excellent work and already help fund them by asking our customers for a £1 donation to them when they go abroad.”

Heape said: "The Foundation is proud to have been able to attract such excellent candidates, who were appointed from a field of 19 applicants for a trusteeship.
“I am sure that Mike, Steve and Guyonne will help our charity continue to go from strength to strength, despite the very difficult economic conditions for the travel industry.
“We are already working closely with Co-operative Travel, who are showing by their support of our programmes that sustainability is at the heart of their business."
