Agents’ ‘honest’ destination guides go online
Travellers keen to find out the undoctored truth about foreign holiday destinations can benefit from special gazetteers giving “warts-and-all” descriptions of hotels and resorts.
According to the Press Association, the book-sized gazetteers are kept behind the counter at travel agents and are only produced if customers specifically ask for them.
But as reported by TravelMole in May Publisher DG&G travel information is now making the books available online – but only to travel agents who pay a fee.
Brenda Wall, managing director of consumer watchdog Holiday TravelWatch told the Press Association: “These gazetteers should be freely available on the internet – to everyone.
“They ought to be displayed on top of the counter – not under it. I’ve tried buying the books, but there are a lot of them and the overall cost is huge. I don’t think many people going into travel agents even know about these guides.”
A spokeswoman for the publishers said that now the guides were going online, travellers could get access to them in travel agents. She added that information about accommodation and holiday destinations could also be updated more regularly.
