Air Berlin orders 70 Airbuses
Air Berlin and Austrian partner NIKI have ordered 110 Airbus A320s worth an estimated $4.5 billion.
The third largest European low cost carrier behind Ryanair and EasyJet placed a firm order for 70 aircraft, 60 of which will go to Air Berlin and 10 to NIKI.
The 174-seat aircrfat will be delivered from September next year for service in Europe.
Air Berlin and Niki are increasing flights from the UK this winter, with daily services from Manchester to Berlin and Dusseldorf, a six times a week frequency to Hamburg and four flights a week to Paderborn.
Air Berlin has also added a Southampton-Paderborn service, while NIKI has launched a Stansted-Vienna link.
Air Berlin already runs a network of seven routes from Stansted to destinations in Germany and Palma, Majorca.
Air Berlin managing partner Joachim Hunold said: “By placing this large order, we want to ensure that we can continue to grow in the low-cost segment for a long time to come.”
Air Berlin currently has a fleet of more than 40 Boeing 737s serving 55 airports.
