Air India forced to reinstate 'overweight' cabin crew

Air India has been ordered to reinstate three flight attendants it had stood down from flying duties for being overweight.

A court in New Delhi said the cash-strapped airline had not “applied its mind” in terminating their services.

The three female employees had been taken off flying duties due to not meeting prescribed weight limits. They were assigned alternative responsibilities after being grounded.

Lawyers for Air India argued that “pleasing appearance, manners and physical fitness was required” in the travel industry and all crew members were expected to remain smart, alert and energetic, according to the court documents.
