Air New Zealand shakes up flight network
Air New Zealand is suspending Auckland-Singapore flights on October 2.
It will switch its Boeing 777-200ER aircraft to its London Heathrow-Auckland flights, NZ1 and NZ2, which are currently operated by B747s.
The airline said the move was due to significant losses on the Singapore route, where it currently has less than a 30% capacity share.
Customers affected by the suspension will be re-booked through arrangements with Star Alliance partners, on alternative ANZ services or with other airlines.
ANZ is in discussions with Star Alliance partners to enable an ANZ codeshare on their flights to Singapore going forward.
European general manager Scott Carr explained: “Buying the new 777 has given us the flexibility to right size aircraft to the varying demand in our markets. With current fuel prices and our focus on optimising fuel usage it also makes sense to operate the more efficient B777 on these services.”
Air New Zealand’s new London-Hong-Kong-Auckland route (NZ38 and NZ39) starting October 29 will stay as a B747-400 operated service.
“We remain firmly committed to our European markets and with the introduction of our new London-Hong Kong-Auckland service we will be offering a 78% increase in seats from London,” added Carr.
In addition, the airline will not recommence twice weekly summer flights between Los Angeles and Christchurch from October 29, due to the current fuel price environment and soft demand.
The intention had been to operate two weekly 777 flights for the summer season.
