AirAsia India tries to strike bag fee deal with regulator

AirAsia India said it would be willing to cut air fares if the India aviation regulator scrapped rules to allow carriers to charge for checked baggage.

AirAsia CEO Mittu Chandilya said the low cost carrier is keen to lower base air fares by 5-7% as long as it is permitted to charge extra for checked bags.

"If the regulator permits, then we will charge Rs 250 from people checking-in up to 15 kg baggage," he said.

He says the logic behind this makes it fairer for all, only charging bag fees for those that use the service.

"We are raising this issue for unbundling check-in baggage and will implement it if we get their nod," Chandilya said.

Directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) rules allow a free allowance of 15kg per person before an Indian airline is allowed to charge extra.
