AirAsia’s long haul unit plans to make its first foray into US airspace with a four flights a week service to Honolulu, Hawaii from November 1.

Details were unveiled in a regulatory filing stating AirAsia X plans to serve the Aloha state from is main hub at Kuala Lumpur via a refueling stop in Osaka, Japan.

The Malaysian carrier said it will operate Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 12 premium seats and 365 in economy.

It is the first time the no frills carrier has contemplated long haul intercontinental flights since ending flights to London and Paris in 2012 due to soaring oil prices.

With fuel prices having halved in less than a year the company reaffirmed a strategy to spread its wings to long haul destinations again and is also having discussions with a feeder airline to start service to an "exclusive" European destination, group CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said.

This route would begin operation in December, AirAsia said.
