Aircraft engine death investigation underway at Amsterdam Schiphol airport

A person died after falling into in aircraft engine’s turbine blades.

It happened on the tarmac at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport as a KLM flight was preparing to depart.

The KLM Cityhopper service was travelling to Billund in Denmark.

“A fatal incident took place when a person ended up in a running aircraft engine,” KLM said in a statement.

“Sadly the person has died.”

The victim has not yet been named or even confirmed if it was an airport worker.

Dutch media outlets suggested it was most likely am airport ground worker.

A full investigation is underway.

“Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we are caring for the passengers and colleagues who saw this,” the airport said.

These incidents are rare.

In 2023, an airport worker died after being ‘ingested’ into a Delta jet engine at San Antonio, Texas.

This was later ruled a suicide by a medical examiner.
