Airline fined for worker’s horrific airport death
Piedmont Airlines has been fined by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) for a tragic airport accident.
It was fined $15,625 for a safety breach leading to the death of passenger service agent Courtney Edwards.
She was sucked and ingested into the engine on December 31, 2022 at Montgomery Regional Airport.
She reportedly walked too close to the engine
OSHA cited ineffective training and a lack of clear instructions from line managers, leading to the airport accident
“Safety is always our top priority for our team members,” said Crystal Byrd, Piedmont Airlines spokesperson.
“We appreciate the recommendations from OSHA and will ensure that a thorough review is accomplished.”
Pedmont was operating the flight as the regional partner of American Airlines.
OSHA issued the general duty clause violation citation last week and Pedmont has another week to agree to implement measures or appeal the fine.
The Communication Workers of America believes the airline will contest the fine.
The union gave testimony to OSHA investigators over the company’s safety culture.
