Airline stocks sink on new variant concerns
Airlines and other travel stocks plummeted on fears a new Covid variant will hamper the travel industry’s recovery.
The European Union followed the UK in blocking flights from several countries in southern Africa including South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
United and Delta Air Lines, which both fly to the African continent both saw double-digit declines. Delta has 35 scheduled flights between the U.S. and South Africa in December. Delta’s transatlantic partner Virgin Atlantic is cancelling flights from Johannesburg to the UK.
