Airlines urge travellers to stay at home
British Airways, BMI and other airlines are urging anyone who does not have to travel today to stay at home, due to major security alerts at UK airports.
BA said it is experiencing severe delays to its operations and some flights are likely to be cancelled during the day.
Customers who have to travel are advised to check on ba.com to find the latest information regarding every BA flight.
Passengers who do decide to travel may only take the following items through the airport security search point:
– Travel documents essential for the journey (eg passports, tickets and visas)
– Pocket sized wallets and pocked sized purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards and identity cards)
– Prescribed medicines essential for the duration of the flight, except in liquid form unless verified as authentic
– Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
– Contact lenses, without bottles of solution
– For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items essential for the flight
– Keys (but no electrical key fobs)
Items not permitted include
– handbags
– electrical or battery powered items including laptops, mobile phones, ipods, remote controls
–
Every other item must be carried in hold luggage
Customers who choose not to travel from any UK airports on will be able to refund or rebook their flight tickets.
All rebookings have to be for travel before December 1, 2006.
Easyjet said it was now considering which flights to cancel and advised customers to check its website, and to go online for refunds or to re-book.
BMI said passengers who do decide to travel are strongly recommended to allow a lot more time when checking in for their flights.
“We would ask those travelling to be patient and be compliant with these new regulations and accept that delays will be inevitable.”
