Airport terrorist threat level 'raised to severe'

Friday, 7 January 20113 min read

The threat level at UK airport and London railway terminals has shifted from ‘substantial’ to ‘severe’, according to the BBC.

However, security officials insist they have no intelligence of an imminent attack at a major transport hub and that the change is ‘precautionary’.

Airports and major railway stations in London are believed to have been operating under a ‘substantial’ threat of terrorist attacks since January 2010, but the threat level across the UK overall has been at the second-highest, ‘severe’, for the past year.

Threat levels are set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, part of MI5, and only the overall threat to the UK is made public. Threats to specific areas of the national infrastructure are changed continually and kept secret. However, the BBC claims the threat at UK airports has been shifted up a level.

More police are likely to be visible at UK airports and railway stations from today, it said.
