Airports remain on alert
UK: Passengers likely to face delays as security remains tight
The nation’s airports remain on alert today following several days of security scares and arrests of suspected terrorists.
Police are continuing to investigate the 37-year-old Venezuelan national found at Gatwick with a live hand grenade, while questioning is also ongoing in the case of four man arrested in village of Langley, a few miles from Heathrow and directly below the airport’s main flight path.
A heightened sense of concern prevails at many airports; Heathrow’s terminal two was closed for several hours on Friday when an unattended bag was spotted, and the public slip-road to Stansted Airport has been closed since Friday, with passengers having to be dropped in the nearby short-stay car parks before making their way to the main terminal.
Passengers using any of the UK’s main airports this week are likely to face delays – especially if there are any more security scares.
One BA executive described the situation at Heathrow recently as “chaos”. He added: “You have got an aircraft coming in from Frankfurt, and just an hour later the crew will go to Oslo and the plane goes to Edinburgh. Once you get out of schedule, you get utter mayhem.”
