Thursday, 8 October 20093 min read

PORT VILA – Michael Kelly, general manager of the Moorings Hotel, Port Vila, Vanuatu, has sent this eyewitness account of the latest earthquake fears to hit the Pacific islands.

Kelly said, “We did watch the tide in the harbour drop twice – the second time more significantly but each time the waters rose again quietly without a wave.

“The yachts and ships that put to sea are all coming back into harbour and the danger is over.

“Guests of Moorings were evacuated up the hill behind Moorings by the NZ High Commission.

“They were grouped under a mango tree and a cool bin with water and some snacks taken up to look after guests.

“It was all about precautions and taking care especially after the horrific week in Samoa.

“So now the bar is open for recovery!

“Thanks to all the well-wishers overseas. At this point there are no reports of damage anywhere and all of Vanuatu is safe.

“Now back to normal after an exciting morning – but it was a good exercise for the hotel and our staff.

“We know what to do, how to do it without panic, and all of our meeting points worked.

“We remain prepared and rest assured that most importantly guest are as safe as we can make them in the event of any emergency.”
