Amelia Island: Enticing cuisine, golf and nature

Amelia Island in the Northeast corner of Florida is as close to the state of Georgia as it is possible to be.

It’s a captivating gem, offering a blend of culinary delights, world-class golf courses, and very importantly, close proximity to the awe-inspiring Okefenokee Swamp. This idyllic destination that almost seems to exist in isolation to everywhere else in the sunshine state promises an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Amelia Island’s culinary scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavours, showcasing the freshest seafood, Southern comfort food, and international cuisine. From casual beachfront eateries to upscale fine dining establishments, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Highlights include succulent shrimp, fresh oysters, and delectable crab dishes while enjoying stunning ocean views. Much of the attraction and indeed quality stems from the fact that within the entire destination there are few if any national let alone global branded outlets. Artisans that are experts in their particular field of cuisine dish up fresh, locally sourced products with excellent service that make eating a real pleasure.

The destination has developed a whole month of celebration for its food. “With the introduction of Dining Month, we’re creating yet another reason to visit. September is one of the best times to enjoy Amelia Island’s wide-open beaches, fantastic weather, and unique Florida charm,” said Gil Langley, President of the Amelia Island Convention & Visitor’s Bureau. “There has never been a better time to discover the islands highly regarded and surprisingly innovative dining scene.”

Fernandina Beach is the island’s beating heart and is a foodie’s paradise. Stroll along its charming small town America streets and discover independently owned cafes, bistros, and restaurants. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample local craft beers and wines.

Amelia Island’s exceptional golf courses are suitable for players of all skill levels. The island’s pristine fairways, lush greenery, and challenging layouts offer a top notch golfing experience.  Amongst several courses I played, Sailfish Sands stands out as one that can accommodate all tastes. It has a 4 tee 18-hole course called Sailfish or a very innovative shorter 9-hole course, Sands, that can be played back to front.

Yes, it confused me at first but when you get there it works very well. In addition they have some very modern practice bays that allow you to track your shots on a big screen whilst having a bite to eat and a drink with friends and family, booth style. Special mention must also be made of the Pete Dye designed Oak Marsh Golf Course which is part of the Omni Hotel. Currently closed until November 2024, it is a high-quality classic with tight fairways and small greens that run parallel to the salt marsh creeks. This is not a challenge that occasional vacation golfers should take on as this is a true test of your Tiger mentality. The par 3, 16th hole deserves additional praise as one of the most attractive holes  I have ever played with a carry of around 180 yards across the creek to an island green.

No visit to Amelia Island would be complete without a journey to the nearby Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a vast and mysterious wetland ecosystem teeming with wildlife. The protected area has been created by a confluence of the Suwannee and St. Marys rivers and stretches across an enormous 353,981 acres. There are a multitude of ways to enjoy Okefenokee, but I was swept along the many waterways through trees, Spanish moss, wildflowers, views of alligators and rare birds, on a slow boat to a natural wetland heaven.

If you’re seeking culinary excellence, golf or a connection with nature, Amelia Island has it all.
