American Airlines cancels more than 1,000 flights

American Airlines says it expects operations to gradually return to normal on Monday after canceling more than 1,000 flights due to Winter Storm Diego.

Another 400 were canceled for early Monday, across nine southeast US airports including its hub Charlotte which was particularly hard hit.

American Airlines’ travel alert offering free changes also included Asheville, Greenboro, Knoxsville, Roanoke and Raleigh-Durham.

Storm Diego has started drifting away but snow will likely remain until Monday afternoon.

Thousands of residents in the Appalachian region are still without power

According to CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri, the region received up to 24 inches of snow since the weekend.

So far, one storm-related death was reported in North Carolina, as well as 500 vehicle accidents state-wide in just 11 hours.
