American Airlines exits Oakland Airport
American Airlines will make its final departure out of Oakland, CA today.
The carrier will halt flights from the airport for good as it is no longer a viable option financially.
American will still serve Bay Area flyers at San Francisco and San Jose.
"We thank the team members who served our customers and will work closely with them during this transition," an airline spokesperson said.
"We’re constantly evaluating our network to meet customer demand. Unfortunately, our service in Oakland was not profitable."
Although the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t helped, Covid-19 wasn’t the only factor in the decision to end flights from the airport.
Although it likely won’t be the last, American becomes the first airline to scrap all flights permanently from an airport since the pandemic began.
It signs off with the midday Oakland-Phoenix departure on Wednesday, which is operated with a Bombardier CRJ700.
Customers with future tickets for Oakland flights can claim a full refund or be rerouted via SFO or San Jose.
