American Airlines has announced its no-frills Basic Economy fares will go on sale from next month.
The fares, which can be booked from February 10, offers the same in-flight experience as the main economy cabin but carry-on bags won’t fly.
Like rival United Airlines, the fare allows for one small item like a purse or small backpack that can fit under the seat.
Anything larger is subject to the applicable checked bag fee.
Seat assignments are made when customers check in and no upgrades are permitted regardless of membership status.
It is clearly a move to claw back lost business from the ultra low cost carriers.
"American Airlines now has something to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ultra-premium experience via First Class," said American Airlines President Robert Isom. "Importantly, this new fare product also gives American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra low-cost carriers."

"Ultra low-cost airlines are growing rapidly — right in our hubs.. Competing aggressively against these airlines is not optional."
Basic Economy fares will initially be rolled out in 10 markets from next month.
The airline has not indicated which markets they will be yet.
