American Airlines is introducing new baggage tracking alerts for passengers.
The customer notification system sends data to passengers via the American app or with push notifications, and alerts them if baggage is not on the same flight as them.
For bags that arrive at the airport early, customers will be notified and instructed to visit the baggage services office rather than wait by the carousel.
The Customer Baggage Notification service also allows fliers to fill out a Mobile Baggage Order on their device with a delivery address for bags which are delayed in transit.
"The automated MBO asks for the customer’s delivery details and a bag description to help expedite reuniting the customer with their items. By using the MBO, customers no longer need to stop at the BSO to file a claim," the airline said.
American rolled out a real-time baggage tracking service for the first time two years ago, while other carriers have continually upgraded their own bag tracking services such as Delta’s bag journey mapping.
There were 2.32 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers reported in May 2017, which is slightly down year-over-year according to US Transportation Department data.
