American Airlines suspends ticket sales in Argentine pesos

Friday, 27 November 20153 min read
American Airlines said it has stopped accepting Argentine pesos for flight bookings due to currency exchange restrictions in Argentina.
President Cristina Fernandez imposed limits on the amount of dollars that businesses could transfer out of the country after a rapid fall in the Argentina’s foreign currency reserves.
American said it will push for reforms with new President-elect Mauricio Macri who takes office next month.
Part of Macri’s election manifesto is to introduce more free-market policies, including removing currency controls.
"We are no longer accepting the Argentine peso as payments for tickets. Travelers can still buy tickets with US dollars and foreign credit cards and currency," an AA statement said.
"We look forward to working with the Central Bank and the new government on this matter."
The airlines said it will continue to operate its scheduled 27 weekly flights from Buenos Aires to Dallas, Miami and New York as normal.
American also suspended local currency ticket sales in Venezuela earlier this year for similar reasons.
