Amtrak price hike

Sunday, 29 Sep, 2005 0

Amtrak announced ticket prices nationwide would increase $3 to $4.

Acela Express and long distance coach trains will have a 7% fare increase. Long distance sleeper trains will go up by 5%.

Amtrak says it needs the added income to balance next year’s budget in the face of higher fuel costs. The later has risen 40% this year, according to the railroad.

Next week, Amtrak says it will start trying to “revenue manage” some Northeast Corridor trains to better match fares to demand periods. That will allow passengers traveling at off-peak times to pay lower fares.

Amtrak’s Acela Express trains are now back in service after being pulled earlier in the month when cracks were found in the trains’ brake systems.
