Another locally transmitted Zika cluster in Miami

Friday, 14 October 20163 min read
Another Zika hot zone has been discovered in Miami where the virus has been found to transmit locally.
It covers a one square mile area of Little River.
Florida’s Department of Health said three men and two women were infected.
This new area is just a few blocks away from Wynwood, which was recently given the Zika all-clear after spraying was thought to have eradicated the mosquito-borne virus there.
An advisory for pregnant women has been extended to the new area.
"Pregnant women should avoid travel to the newly designated area, in addition to the previously identified designated areas in Miami-Dade County, because active local transmission of Zika has been identified," the US Centers for Disease Control said in a statement.
As he announced the new zone, Florida Gov. Rick Scott called for more speed in releasing funds to fight the spread of Zika.
"Today’s announcement of a new area in Miami of ongoing local transmission of the Zika virus underscores the urgent need for federal funding to combat the Zika virus," Scott said.
"It has been two weeks since federal funding to fight Zika was approved by Congress and signed by President Obama. However, Florida has not yet received a dime. We don’t need bureaucratic timelines – we need funding now."
As of this week the state had recorded 155 non-travel related infections of Zika.
