Another tourist car crash sparks new NZ campaign

Following another deadly car accident involving foreign tourists, New Zealand tourism and transport ministry officials are stepping up efforts to educate foreign drivers on road safety.

The agency revealed more than 200 Chinese visitors have been killed or injured on the country’s roads since 2009.

The latest incident last week resulted in three deaths when a car carrying Hong Kong tourists collided head-on with a truck near the North Island town of Torokoa.

New Zealand tour operators say an increasing number of Chinese tourists are taking self-drive tours, rather than traditional coach tours.

"We are working hard to improve safety for everyone who uses New Zealand’s roads, and we are working with the Ministry of Transport, New Zealand Police, local government and the tourism industry to reach visiting drivers," said a spokesman for the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The New Zealand Transport Agency partnered up with Tourism New Zealand and Air New Zealand last April for a Chinese-language driver safety video screened on the Air NZ flights from the mainland and Hong Kong.

Tourism New Zealand’s chief executive Kevin Bowler said at the time: "We know that driving conditions in New Zealand are very different to those experienced in China and Hong Kong, and this can come as something of a surprise to some of our visitors."
