Athens hotel workers plan Olympic strike

Sunday, 07 Jul, 2004 0

Hotel workers in the Greek capital Athens are reportedly threatening to go on strike during the Olympic Games next month.

According to a report on the BBC News website, a union representing some 7,000 hotel staff is demanding a pay rise and a one-off “Olympic bonus” for its members and had already called a one-day strike. It is promising to bring about further industrial action unless hotel owners pay up.

The BBC reports that the country’s hotel association is trying to play down the importance of the proposed action, saying that occupancy rates are not high at the moment.

But, the report points out, that is hardly likely to be the case once the Games get under way on 13 August.
