Atlantic City courting cruise ship business
Eager to keep Atlantic City’s struggling tourism economy afloat, Mayor Don Guardian wants to position the city as a port of call for cruise lines.
"We’ll be looking at getting the federal government to help establish a port in Atlantic City," he said.
A preliminary study has been made of the preferred site which is deep enough to accommodate cruise ships around 200 feet long.
It would be able to serve smaller vessels rather than the mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers.
"I definitely think it’s a good idea," said Tom Ballance, president of Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
"I always thought we could attract more business if a cruise line ran out of Atlantic City."
Cruise ship business would help to diversify the city’s tourism industry which has suffered a number of blows since the recession.
Last week the city rolled out a new marketing campaign aimed at the LGBT community and has recently been talking to European based budget airlines Jet2 and Ryanair about running charter flights to Atlantic City International Airport.
