‘Audacious’ expenses wasting vast sums of money
Bosses are getting away with thousands of pounds worth of dubious expense claims, a poll shows.
The survey of 16,000 PAs found extremes such as £20,000 for re-spraying a private helicopter and two tonnes of white bait to secure a hunting licence in Zimbabwe through to a dry cleaning bill for five suits, three cocktail dresses and an evening gown for a four-day trip to Cannes, business meetings at lap dancing clubs and duplicate client entertaining bills.
One senior manager even claimed for flowers and dinner with his mistress.
Nine out of 10 PAs questioned by Travelodge and recruitment firm Office Angels said that food and drink was the main category that most managers could get away with filing and extravagant expense claim.
The budget hotel chain’s sales and marketing director Guy Parsons said: “As audacious as the claims may be, the alarming factor is that businesses are wasting a vast amount of money by not keeping a closer eye one claims made by staff. In the current environment, you have to question why more organisations aren’t taking a serious look at what their employees waste money on.”
The survey also revealed that almost 70% booked budget accommodation for business trips to save money. Half spent between £50-£100 on accommodation, while 42% spent £100-£200.
