Aussies visit South Africa in record numbers

SYDNEY – Figures announced this week reveal that the number of Australians travelling to South Africa has broken a record, with more than 100,000 people choosing to travel to South Africa in 2008.

The figure represents a 4.8 percent increase on overall growth.

Bangu Masisi, general manager, South African Tourism Australasia, said that such strong numbers were due to increased awareness amongst travellers on the products and experiences South Africa has to offer.

“The Australian public is aware of the variety of experiences available in South Africa, from luxury retreats to city, cultural and community tours, along with the adventure-seeking safaris.

“Their eagerness to see these sights for themselves has been shown in these outstanding figures for 2008,” she added.

South Africa also welcomed an increased number of New Zealanders to its shores, with over 19, 945 visiting in 2008, a 5.8 percent increase on 2007.

Masisi said although times ahead would be tough for all international destinations, the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and a continuous commitment to improving the infrastructure and product on offer, would continue to attract Australian visitors.
