Australia-NZ travel could restart in July
The Australasian ‘travel bubble’ could be ready for take-off by early July.
Talks between the two countries are well advanced and trans-Tasman flights may begin as early as July.
According to NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern the governments ‘are working to move on this as quickly as we can.’
"It won’t be too long before we are ready."
"Our aim is to put forward a detailed set of recommendations that safely manage any health risks, while also allowing Kiwis and Australians to travel to each country without the need for a 14-day quarantine," said Scott Tasker, co-chair of the Trans-Tasman Safe Border Group, which is tasked with setting up necessary protocols to curb any further spread of Covid-19.
John Hart, chair of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Tourism says international travel will ‘definitely commence on July 1 and from September we will consider whether other bubbles can commence.’
"We have done a lot of discussion with the NZ side and they are saying we are good to go," Hart said.
Other regional destinations which could be included in a second phase are New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.
More than 1.4 million Kiwis visited Australia in 2019.
