Australia endured its hottest day on record yesterday when the national average temperature soared to a high of 40.9C (105.6F).
This exceeded the previous record of 40.3C set almost seven years ago, in January 2013.
Australia is battling a severe drought and bushfires due to the extensive heat.
Temperatures could rise even higher later this week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
At the start of this week, Perth, the capital of Western Australia (above), recorded three days in a row above 40C, which is a record for December.
