Australia tops British backpacker poll
A Lonely Planet poll in Britain has shown what has been described as a “definite surge in people travelling to the ‘old favourite countries”, with Australia topping the poll of the destinations most favoured by Britain’s young generation of backpackers.
Australia appears to be clear leader and firm favourite with gap year students and people looking for a longer than average holiday, with many hiring a campervan and driving around the coastline, stopping off to visit up key sights on the way.
Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney are highlights of any trip down under.
The report says that Aussies will be particularly pleased to have beaten antipodean neighbours New Zealand, which only came fifth according to the findings.
However, New Zealand has recently enjoyed a surge in tourism thanks to the spectacular mountain scenery captured in the lavish Lord of the Rings films.
The US re-entered the top ten in second place in this year’s poll, with Thailand in third and sunny Spain just behind in fourth.
However, destinations commonly perceived as more “adventurous”, including South American countries such as Peru and Chile, did not rate.
Lonely Plants said, “Fashionable destinations come and go but the classics remain”.
