Authorities eye Etna as smoke continues to rise

Scientists are keeping an eye on Mount Etna, Italy’s highest active volcano, after activity was detected in the southeast crater.

Several "relatively intense ash emissions were observed," VolcanoDiscovery.com reports, and dense ash plumes rose into the sky.

The Sicilian peak has erupted nine times this year, and has been actively spewing lava since February.

The locals are starting to get nervous, BBC News reported, and some have called on the government to declare a state of emergency.

The Prefecture of Catania last week published new regulations limiting access to the mountain.

Visits to the summit crater itself and to some other areas now are allowed only to parties accompanied by certified mountain guides.
