BA offer “moving in right direction”
British Airways bosses will today hold more talks with union leaders in an effort to avoid a 24-hour strike over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend.
The carrier has offered employees a £1,000 bonus as long as they take no more than 17 days off over the course of a two-year period.
The bonus would come on top of BA’s existing offer of an 8.5 per cent increase over three years; the airline is claiming that the increased offer is the equivalent to a 14.5 per cent rise, which meets unions’ demands.
The Guardian quotes British Airways’ operations director Mike Street as saying: “We think this is a sensible and attractive way forward. Improving absence has a major contribution to help us meet the challenge we face now and in the future.”
Absenteeism is a major problem for BA; the carrier’s check-in staff take an average of 17 days sick leave each year and three times the normal number of staff are reported to have called in sick on Monday, after plans for strike action was announced.
The Guardian quotes union leaders as saying that BA’s offer was “moving in the right direction”.
