Bagan-Siem Reap seek new air links
PHNOM PENH – Myanmar and Cambodia are working to improve direct air links and visa exemptions between the two countries.
The plan includes diverting more tourists from Cambodia’s Siem Reap to Myanmar’s Bagan, the Yangon Times said.
About 500,000 international tourists visited Siem Reap last year of which more than 100,000 also visited Bagan, said Cambodian Tourism Minister, Thong Khon.
High-level talks have agreed to launch direct flights between Bagan and Mandalay to Siem Reap. Additionally, Myanmar aircraft will have permission to land at any airport in Cambodia, according to the report.
The two countries’ move follows three prior agreements signed in October 1996 on tourism cooperation, air services and establishment of sister cities between Bagan and Siem Reap.
Meanwhile Myanmar and Cambodia are continuing to work with Laos and Vietnam on a long-awaited Indochina air pass.
Myanmar’s first national private airline, Air Bagan, has plans to fly to six destinations in Asia, including to Siem Reap in late October.
According to local statistics, a total of over 630,000 foreign tourists visited Myanmar in 2006.
