Bahamas to develop faith-based travel opportunities

Thursday, 6 March 20143 min read

A Bahamas tourism leader said its government is committed to developing faith-based tourism in the islands.

Linville Johnson, director of faith-based tourism, was responding to comments questioning whether the Bahamas is a ‘Christian nation,’ and said Christian travelers will feel right at home.

"Bahamas abide by Christian principles and religious tolerance, and we recognize God and we’re not ashamed of God," he said.

Around 70% of visitors come from North America and Johnson wants to develop more options to cater to faith-based activities.

The Bahamas already has a successful People-To-People cultural exchange program that includes an option to attend local church services.

Johnson also wants to pitch the Bahamas as an ideal meeting destination for Christian organizations and church groups.

His department has set up a dedicated web portal for religious group travel planners and communicates special offers and promotions via the Business of Religious Tourism (BORT) newsletter.
