Bali Hyatt staff to keep jobs
The management and owner of the Bali Hyatt Hotel in Sanur have agreed to retain the hotel’s employees, despite the fact that the hotel is due to undergo massive renovation, starting in November.
The chairman of the Bali Hyatt workers’ union told the Bali Post that the union had received a letter of confirmation from the management saying it would not be firing the hotel employees, as previously planned.
Workers from the Bali Hyatt Hotel have been protesting the hotel’s decision to make them redundant, due to a two-year renovation programme.
Most of the hotel’s 352 workers have been employed at the hotel for between 10 and 30 years.
Almost 200 of them accepted the management’s decision and compensation of up to US$6,000 per person, while the remainder protested their dismissal notices.
The union official said: "The case of the Bali Hyatt should be a valuable lesson for other hotel managements to not act against their employees’ welfare.
