Bangladesh, India resume rail services after 36 years

DHAKA – Bangladesh and India will resume regular train services in September after 36 years.

Initially, two trains will operate between the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka and the eastern Indian metropolis of Kolkatta each week, a Bangladesh railway ministry official said after talks with Indian officials.

Officials from the two countries discussed the immigration and customs procedures and fares during a two-day meeting.

Train services between the two countries stopped in 1965 following a war between India and Pakistan. Bangladesh was then part of Pakistan and became independent in 1971.

Kolkatta and Dhaka are currently connected by air and bus services. The slow train is expected to cover a distance of 215 miles between Dhaka and Kolkatta in 12 hours.
