Belarus ‘hijacking’ has upended Europe’s aviation map
The Belarus ‘hijacking’ of a Ryanair flight is having a fundamental impact on flight routing – and a likely loss of confidence in air travel safety generally for passengers.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency effectively shut down Belarus airspace to international air travel while non-European airlines such as Singapore Airlines are avoiding travel over Belarus.
Belarus ally Russia has also weighed into the spat, initially denying entry into its own airspace for airlines trying to bypass Belarus. If it drags on it could see flight times increase and airfares likely rise.
