Belgian transport minister resigns over security at Brussels Airport

The Belgian transport minister has resigned after accusations she lied about a critical report on security at Brussels Airport long before last month’s bombing.

Public broadcaster RTBF said Prime Minister Charles Michel had accepted the resignation of Jacqueline Galant on Friday.

Michel had earlier defended the minister, saying her office had not been aware of an EU report sent a year ago which criticised security at the airport, reports Reuters.

However, reports suggest that documents presented late on Thursday had shown that Galant’s office had indeed been informed of the EU report.

On March 22, two IS suicide bombers detonated suitcase bombs in the departure hall of Brussels Airport before a third struck a metro train in the city.

32 people were killed and the airport was temporarily closed.
