German police have released a man arrested over the Berlin terror attack and believe the perpetrator is still free and could be armed and dangerous.
Germany’s Die Welt newspaper is quoting an unnamed senior police source saying: "We have the wrong man and therefore a new situation.
"The true perpetrator is still armed, at large, and can cause fresh damage."
Earlier reports had said police had arrested a 23-year-old Pakistani asylum seeker, Naved Baluch, after picking him up at a refugee centre near the Christmas market where the attack took place.
He was initially identified by witnesses at the scene but has now been ruled out as a suspect.
Earlier today ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack but authorities say there is no evidence of a direct link to the terror group.
The US Embassy in Berlin said in a statement the potential for further terror attacks are still ‘a concern across Europe, particularly during the holiday period. In light of the on-going investigation, Embassy Berlin encourages all US citizens to maintain good situational awareness, a low profile, and exercise vigilance.’
