Firefighters were called into action on Tuesday evening to put out a blaze at New York JFK airport.

The Fire Department dealt with a garbage fire at the airport’s Lufthansa cargo building which was safely extinguished within 30 minutes.

Fire Department officials said fourteen people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and a further four people were taken to nearby Jamaica Hospital.

The fire was discovered underneath dock 5 at the cargo building but there was no disruption to air traffic in and out of the airport.

Earlier, there were first reports that the blaze was caused by a chemical leak however this was eventually identified as a separate spillage of a fragrance-like liquid, said a Port Authority spokesman.
