bmibaby says future of Jersey flights depends on fees
Bmibaby has announced that it will serve Jersey from Cardiff and East Midlands airports, but is unhappy with landing fees at the Channel Islands airport.
The no-frills carrier has received regulatory clearance to operate services to Jersey.
From 27 October bmibaby will offer one flight per day into Jersey from both Cardiff and East Midlands. However, the carrier has stated that unless landing fees are reduced at Jersey, it may have to rethink its services.
Bmibaby managing director, Tony Davis said: “We are pleased to have won the battle to be able serve Jersey and whilst we’re boosting capacity for the winter season I fear that services may be threatened if the current charging structure that is in place at the airport is not reformed”.
“Low cost carriers bring a wealth of benefits to airports, such as increased passenger throughput and a significant boost to the economy, however it seems some airports are all too happy to sit back and reap the rewards of low cost carriers without reforming their charges for using the airport”.
Tickets to Jersey will go on sale Thursday. Internet fares start from £25 one way.
