Boeing Co. has agreed to pay $12 million in penalties after failing to submit service instructions that would enable airlines to mitigate risk of fuel tank explosions on planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the fine also relates to a delay in fixing incorrectly installed fasteners used on airliners.
The action alleged ‘delays in submitting required safety information, production quality control problems, and failures to implement corrective actions for those production problems.’
"It is imperative that everyone complies with our aviation system’s high safety standards," said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
Boeing must improve internal auditing procedures ensuring relevant personnel have ‘appropriate technical expertise to assess the extent of regulatory compliance.’
The plane maker could be subject to as much as $24 million in additional fines over five years if it fails to complete all the necessary actions.
The settlement is the second largest ever in the aviation industry for regulatory violations and covered 13 different issues, some of which have not been disclosed.
Being Co said it is ‘actively working on the areas identified in the agreement,’
