Japan Airlines will invest US10 million to help revive supersonic air travel.

JAL is taking a strategic stake in US based Boom Supersonic which is working on developing next-generation supersonic planes.

The Japanese carrier will be able to buy up to 20 Boom supersonic jets through a pre-order agreement.

Boom says it hopes to launch an aircraft during the next decade at speeds of Mach 2.2 or 2,335 km per hour.

It would have a flying range of more than 8,000km.

The company hopes to produce a ‘reliable, easily-maintained aircraft that will provide revolutionary speed to passengers,’ said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic.

JAL will additionally have input by providing its expertise to define in-flight experience and design.

"Through this partnership, we hope to contribute to the future of supersonic travel with the intent of providing more time to our valued passengers," said JAL president Yoshiharu Ueki in a statement.
